Don’t throw your Christmas cards away! There are so many creative ways to use your Christmas cards, many of which you can do with your kids. We have brought together some ideas below.

* Christmas jigsaw game:
Make a Christmas jigsaw game. Gather 10-20 cards and cut each one into 3 or 4 pieces, using straight lines. Shuffle them up and lay them out on a flat service such as a dining table or the floor – then put them back together again! Store the cards in a shoebox for next time. This is fun on a quiet family evening at the beginning of the season as it helps to get everybody into the Christmas spirit!

* Christmas tree ornaments:
Make cinnamon stick ornaments for the Christmas tree. Wrap a small bundle of cinnamon sticks together with a pretty ribbon tied in a bow (leave a loop for hanging). Using a small dab of glue, attach a pretty shape cut from a Christmas card with pinking shears to the centre of the ribbon bow to finish the ornament off. These look pretty and smell delicious too!

* Scented sachets:
Make scented sachets to give as gifts or fragrance your own home. Simply glue the bottom and side edges of the card together and then slip a small amount of potpourri (or a cotton ball on which you have dropped a little Christmas essential oil) into the space. Use a hole punch to make two holes on the top edge, through which you can thread a pretty ribbon before tying a bow. If you leave a loop in the ribbon, the sachets can be hung on door handles, coat hooks or radiators (the heat will help to release the scent, but it won’t last as long) to create a welcoming, Christmas atmosphere.

* Christmas mobile or “string”:
Cut shapes out of the cards in matching pairs. Hearts work nicely, as do simple Christmas tree shapes and even plain squares and circles. Stick the cards back to back and laminate them, then punch a hole in them and use to make a colorful and child-friendly mobile or “string” to decorate next year. You could add to this every year. As a variation, you could back each shape with a plain-colored piece of card or construction paper and write on it the date and name of the person who sent the card.

* Christmas card game:
Cut playing-card shapes out of the cards, stick a piece of plain card over any writing if necessary, and use to make a Christmas game or quiz for your children to play next year. Laminate to protect.

* Gift tags:
A traditional activity, but one which never fails to amuse the kids, is making gift tags for next year’s presents. Use pinking sheers, a hole punch, and leftover ribbon

* Gift bags:
Make gift bags for next year by saving smart paper bags. Cut a nice shape out of each card and stick it to the front of the bag (covering any shop labels if necessary). Sometimes one Christmas card will yield many different bag decorations! Add a little ribbon bow just above the card and wrap your present in tissue paper before putting it into the bag. This looks lovely with brown paper bags and tartan ribbons.

* Miniature Christmas cards:
Some Christmas card designs can be cut and folded into miniature Christmas cards for the kids to give next year, or for decorating the dolls house.

* Christmas screensaver:
Scan your favorite cards into the computer – and some of your favorite messages from inside the cards as well – and make them into a Christmas wallpaper or screensaver with a photo program. Children love this and it is a great memento if you do it each year.

* Lacing card:
Cut out the pictures on the larger cards, punch holes around the edges with a hole punch, add a shoelace or brightly colored yarn (with sticky tape wrapped around the ends) and you have a cheerful and cheap lacing card for little ones. If they are particularly popular you could laminate them to make them last longer.

* Christmas confetti:
Make some Christmas confetti to use next year (scatter it on the Christmas table, or put a pinch inside your Christmas cards and gifts!) Use either a plain hole punch or a special Christmas one (both together look great) and choose the most colorful areas from each card to cut. Gold and silver looks very effective, especially mixed in with red and green. Small scraps of leftover wrapping paper can be used too. You can keep the children busy with this for hours!

If you are like the majority of people, you do not have a lot of time during the holidays to make special decorations. You can make your holiday decorating quick and easy and create a festive atmosphere in your home without spending a lot of time and money, leaving you more time to enjoy the holiday season with your family.

Here are some holiday decorating tips that are free and inexpensive that will require very little effort:

Tableware:

Use festive tableware for every meal during the month of December. Search your cupboards and drawers and get out anything that looks remotely festive. You can also shop discount and one-dollar stores and find many items for the holidays that you can use every year. You can add to your collection of holiday tableware each year and soon you will have many types of dishes that will make your holidays special.

Bows:

Try decorating with bows. Ribbons tied around chairs, plants, candlesticks, drapes, stairs and doorknobs make wonderful decorations. Place bows and ribbons in many locations throughout your home for a festive look that is quick and easy. The bows and ribbons do not have to be green and red. You can try many colors or match the bows and ribbons to the colors you have in your home. Choose ribbons that you can reuse each year. When the holidays are over, pack the bows and ribbons carefully so that you can use them again and again.

Wreaths:

Put a holiday wreath on every door in your home. Use real pine, holly, and grapevine and decorate with berries, fruit and pinecones. If you purchase artificial wreaths you will be able to use them year after year.

Candles:

Arrange many candles around the room and turn the lights off during holiday meals. You will create a special, festive atmosphere that will be remembered and anticipated by your family each year. A fire in the fireplace each night will add to the holiday spirit. You can also arrange candles in your bathroom and around your bathtub. Watch small children carefully when you decorate with candles.

Holiday decorating does not have to be difficult or expensive. Simple decorations throughout your house will make fond memories for your family and will be anticipated year after year. Make sure to put out plenty of scented potpourri and scented oils in various locations throughout your home.

Christmas is without doubt the most delightful time of the year. The Christmas tree is a much appreciated symbolization straightaway calling up images of Christmas gifts and family jolliness.

For kids, sitting below the Christmas tree with the lights blinking is a daily avocation during the holiday time of the year. Turning all lights in the room off and lighting the Christmas tree alone will create an attractive, wonderful glow for the whole space. With some soft Christmas music running in the background, it definitely would become a fantastic way to pass your day. The best component of Christmas is beautifying the Christmas tree.

Most Christmas trees are raised on farms, just like grains and corn are. They are an agrarian product meant to be cut off and new ones planted to replace them. The scent of a refreshing Christmas tree fills up your home. You can sense it whenever you walk in the door. The distinct smell of a Christmas that invigorates memories from your younger days. Most of us cannot wait for the branches to fall down expecting the tree trimming celebration that comes soon.

The Greek Fir is mostly used for Christmas trees. Ancient Greeks named the tree “Pitys” and, along with the pine-tree, it was considered sacred. From ancient periods, evergreen trees have been venerated as a symbol of fertility and sexual potency, and acted a vital part in Winter Celebrations. Maybe the Christmas tree is a irrigated-down variant of the Scandinavian Yggdrasil, the grand Tree of liveliness.

Fake Christmas Trees are becoming a big competition for the nature since more and more people assemble around them on Christmas day. One most important reason to buy the artificial Christmas tree is the risk of fire hazards. The artificial tree is very safe for a family to make use of. Also, the fake tree is a one-time bargain that can be used for many seasons to come. In case you relish the family pleasure trip to look for the suitable Christmas tree, the angelic aroma of fresh pine as you arrange your Christmas tree and the feel of tradition that is scene on these kinds of holiday pleasures, then a fake Christmas tree is not ideal for you.

Beautifying the Christmas tree can be an energizing and funny family activity. A conventional Christmas tree is one that is ornamented with popcorn and gumdrops, tinsel and ribbons, it can be very exiting when you switch on the home lights and plug in the Christmas tree. Several manufacturers are there who make these beautifying products, some of which engage in manufacturing collectible Christmas tree ornaments. Every season they add another new item to adorn the series. For many folks this has become a very lucrative pursuit, especially if you can foretell which type of Christmas tree ornaments will be of great demand in the coming years.

LED Christmas tree lights give us a clean and new way to minimize electricity bills while still enjoying a good-looking Christmas tree that spotlights and exhibits your home decorations. Also, the Light Emitting Diode Christmas tree is pre-lighted for convenience and a real saver of time on those fussy Christmas shopping days where there is very little time.

Many of us connect a Christmas tree with holiday celebrations. This will help to raise their feel and get them into the Christmas flavor. In this respect a Christmas tree turns much more than merely a symbolic representation in our social life. It’s amusing to beautify your home for Christmas. Never try to turn things excessively perfect. Love the rite of setting up your Christmas decorations, and when it’s complete, turn off the lights inside, plug in the Christmas tree lights, prepare a cup of hot floral or chocolate tea, and sit back and relax with your family members.

If you love to go all out with your Christmas decorating, here is a whimsical, original idea for your bathroom.

If you love to go all out with your Christmas decorating, here is a whimsical, original idea for your bathroom.

Materials needed:

* White shower curtain, canvas, or fabric (a new canvas drop cloth works great)

* Shower curtain liner (to protect curtain from moisture)

* Plastic rings

* Projector

* Permanent black marker, preferably a thick one

* Paint pens

* Paint

* Fiberfill or cotton balls

* Santa hat

* Black felt (about one yard)

* 2 red hand towels or red fabric

{If you can draw, you may not need the projector. If you are not artistically inclined, and do not already own a projector, see if you can borrow one.}

Let’s get started!

If you’re using fabric instead of a shower curtain, you’ll need to make it standard shower curtain size, which is about 72″ x 72″. Cut the fabric 73″ x 73″, fold each side over one half inch, press into place, and hem each side to make smooth edges. Purchase plastic rings (usually found near the curtain rods) and sew them to the top for shower curtain rings.

If you don’t already have a second rod, pick up a tension rod. They are inexpensive and simple to install.

The next step is finding a great picture of Santa Clause. Look in coloring books, storybooks, or online. Once you find a picture you like, blow it up on the projector until Santa looks life-sized.

Hang the fabric or shower curtain on the wall or a door with thumbtacks or straight pins, and project the image onto it. Santa’s knees should be about 6″ from the bottom of the shower curtain. Stop at the knees and do not draw the rest of the legs (you will see why later).

Next, trace the image with a permanent black marker (put paper behind the curtain to keep marker from seeping through). Fill in the details for Santa’s face as well as other intricate areas with the paint pens. Fill in his suit with paint. Nearly any kind of paint will do, but craft paint is the least expensive.

In order to create a three dimensional effect, use fiberfill or stretched out cotton balls for Santa’s hair and beard. Apply with regular school glue or use fabric glue. Use a real Santa hat instead of painting one. These can be found at dollar stores and discount stores for very little money. Simply stitch the hat onto the curtain from the backside, or attach it with fabric glue.

Add a piece of black felt for Santa’s belt. A real buckle makes a nice touch. You can remove a buckle from an old belt that you no longer wear and thread the felt through it, or you can purchase a used belt at a thrift store and simply remove the buckle to use it for this project. Stitch the felt into place or apply with fabric glue.

Hang the curtain and tuck the bottom edge inside the tub. Santa’s knees should line up closely with the edge of the tub.

Here’s the really fun part: Fold the red towels in half lengthwise and stitch or glue the sides together. If using fabric, cut to the size of regular hand towels (not fingertip towels) and proceed as directed above.

Next, arrange the towels so that the attached edges are in the middle instead of along the side then press into place with a warm iron. This seam should face the shower curtain so it won’t show. Stitch or glue the towels to Santa’s knees.

Santa now has three-dimensional legs that swing when the curtain moves!

Make mittens and boots from the leftover black felt. Attach the mittens to the curtain and the boots to the towels.

Another neat idea is to set a pair of boots outside the tub and tuck the “legs” into the boots. This looks terrific and makes the effect even more dimensional.

This idea is best used in the guest bathroom or on the day company is coming, after everyone has showered, if used in the main bathroom (otherwise, you’ll have to keep moving the boots each time the tub is needed).

To make your shower curtain even more festive, wrap small empty boxes to look like gifts and attach them to the curtain, or sew on tiny plastic ornaments or candy canes. Just use your imagination.

This is a fun, yet fairly simple project to complete, and you will get lots of compliments on this unique, whimsical decorating idea.

The arrival of the holidays brings with it the opportunity to entertain. We gather together to celebrate the joy of the season through a multitude of lovely parties – our own or those of our friends’ or family’s. Nothing sets the tone of a holiday gathering more than the decorating of one’s home. Candles are lit, wreaths are hung, and garland is strewn. And for the holiday table around which we gather, there is the Christmas centerpiece.

A Christmas centerpiece can encompass many things – a basket of pine cones, a grouping of candles, or an arrangement of flowers or plants. The possibilities are only as limited as your imagination. While many hosts or hostesses will purchase their Christmas centerpiece, this can be quite expensive; especially if you are purchasing a fresh or dried flower arrangement.

But a beautiful Christmas centerpiece need not only result from a trip to a high-end store. There are plenty of ways to inexpensively design your own Christmas centerpiece for little money; all it takes is some creativity and time. For instance, if you have your heart set on a Christmas centerpiece that focuses on fresh or dried flowers then try your hand at designing your own. There are plenty of wholesale flower markets where you can find a bargain; purchasing your own flowers and then arranging them in a festive vase can make a lovely Christmas centerpiece. Just be sure to keep the arrangement on the short side; you want your guests to be able to see each other and for conversation to flow smoothly.

For dried flowers, visit your local craft store. You’ll find a large variety of dried flowers in the colors of the season to help you construct a beautiful Christmas centerpiece. Because these flowers don’t require water, feel free to arrange them in a container that suits you, such as a basket.

While you are in the craft store, you may want to check out their class schedule. Most retail craft stores offer periodic classes for crafters to learn a certain project. Around the holidays you’ll find classes in everything from wreath making to candle making. If you look around you’ll be sure to find some classes on designing and making a unique Christmas centerpiece.

As you welcome your family and friends into your home this holiday season, light your candles and lavish your table with the beauty of the season. And in so doing, don’t forget to include a beautiful Christmas centerpiece. It will put the finishing touches on your home’s holiday spirit.

With the holiday season soon upon us, it’s time to think about some fun crafts you can do with your children in preparation of Christmas. My kids love doing holiday crafts, and I’m sure yours will too!

It has always been challenging to find age-appropriate crafts that all of the children will enjoy making. My children each have a few years between them, so we have amassed quite a collection of crafts and craft ideas. Here are a few suggestions you can use. Consider it an early Christmas gift from me to you!

Bead garlands are one of my all-time favorite crafts. They are fun to make, extremely colorful, and great for children of all ages. You will need some string or plastic cord, a whole lot of beads, some scissors, and some glue. Cut the string or cord to the desired length, and thread it through the first bead. Tie a knot around that bead, and add some glue to keep it secure. Now add the rest of your beads. When you reach the end, tie the string off on the last bead and add some more glue. Now that was fun, wasn’t it?

Pine cone ornaments have also become classics in our Christmas craft repertoire. They are appropriate for children of any age, and keep very well in storage. You will need to spend some time collecting the pine cones. We collect them when we are out walking the dog. We simply paint them with silver or gold paint, and cover them with glitter. Let them dry somewhere safe, and tie them to your tree with a piece of ribbon. Are you getting in the holiday spirit, yet?

Bell ornaments are also a lot of fun to make, and they will last for years to come. We feel that small terra cotta pots are the best to use. Have the children paint the pot green, and allow it to dry. Once the pot is completely dry, attach fake jewels or beads to it with glitter glue. Then thread a small bell with some ribbon, and pull the ribbon up through the hole in the pot. Tie a knot in the ribbon so the bell stays secure, and add any other final touches you might like.

I am sure your kids will love these crafts as much as mine do! Have a wonderful holiday, all!

Christmas decorating doesn’t have to be a bank-breaking event. There are plenty of ways to create a warm and festive environment with limited resources. Begin by pulling out all the family favorites. Homemade ornaments made throughout the years are far more special than anything you could buy in the store. Display them on your Christmas tree or on top of your mantel; perhaps line them up on your mantel by year as a creative and nostalgic timeline of Christmases past.

When it comes to your Christmas tree, Christmas decorating can be as simple or ornate as your tastes allow. But either way, it doesn’t have to be an expensive endeavor. Use popcorn garland to adorn your tree; this can be a fantastic project to do with kids. Depending on their ages they can help pop and string their own fancy garland. Dried fruit slices also look beautiful for Christmas decorating.

For Christmas decorating around your home, the ideas are endless. Head outside to collect pine cones – another great activity for the kids – then paint and spray with glitter to construct your own wreath or mantel garland. Or make garland with strips of colored paper or material. Loop the strips through each other and staple together. You can even paint and string small pasta tubes for a unique rope of garland. Suspended from the garland you can attach Christmas cards that you receive throughout the season or holiday pictures from past and present.

Or take your outdoor treasures and fill baskets with pine cones, and branches. Tie ribbons around the basket and add candles of varying heights into the center. You can create a beautiful centerpiece for any holiday table or a beautiful showpiece for other Christmas decorating.

For further ideas on Christmas decorating log on to the Internet. There are virtually thousands of low-cost, creative ideas for Christmas decorating. Many are projects you can do with children as you all prepare for the holiday season ahead.

Christmas decorating is only as limited as your imagination. Let the kid in you come out this holiday season and see where your imagination takes you.

Among the first things that family and friends see when they come for that special holiday gathering is the outside of your home. Although just about everyone decorates with outside Christmas lights and other decor they occasionally forget about the Christmas plants that could be used to make a beautiful appearance.

Window boxes, sometimes called window planters, can be bought at many discount stores or hardware stores. You can also find several online stores that sell window boxes or will custom make the planters to accommodate your needs. Because the windows in homes vary in shape and size, you must be careful to choose the right planter.

Measure the window for the exact width before you order or purchase a planter box. Also, make sure you have the correct hardware to use with your window and planter. Now, choose the theme, design and color you desire. You can either purchase one already decorated or with a specific theme or choose a neutral one to use throughout the year. Since the boxes are usually created from wood, they can easily be painted and stenciled in any way you choose.

The type of plants you choose can vary according to your location and your personal preferences. When decorating for Christmas, selecting greens and reds will keep your decor in the holiday spirit. Hearty cold weather greenery, such as holly, is always a good selection. Adding colorful berries can give that merry color. Many people also prefer to use items such as pine cones for an added special touch.

If your weather is too harsh for live plants or if you just don’t have a green thumb, artificial plants can also be used in the planter box. Choose the greenery according to your preferences and make sure to purchase floral foam, wire and tape to secure that the plants in the window box.

Mistletoe has been used to decorate homes during Christmas for many, many years. There has been a long held tradition of kissing underneath mistletoe hanging from a door frame. Making your own mistletoe creation is simple and inexpensive, so get ready for the holidays by making an easy mistletoe kissing ball.

You can easily and cheaply create your own mistletoe kissing balls with only a few items which can be easily purchased at almost any craft store. The items you will need for your creation are:

    * mistletoe
* floral foam ball
* floral wire
* ribbon

Optional items you could also use are:

    * berries
* additional greenery such as fir
* Christmas themed cut outs

Gather the mistletoe, berries and other greenery and wrap the ends with floral wire. Stick the pieces wrapped in floral wire into the foam ball, arranging the pieces according to your preference. Add Christmas themed cut outs, if desired. Attach a loop of floral wire into the top of the ball and thread a piece of ribbon through the loop to hang the completed ball.

You can make your mistletoe kissing ball in any size you choose. Also, you can get really creative and add any other objects you think will look pleasing. Each one you make will be your own unique design. This craft can bee a good project for children with adult supervision.

Younger children would need an adult to assist with wrapping the pieces with floral wire. Most children would be able to complete the rest of the project with minimal assistance.

Because these decorations are so easy and inexpensive to make, you will be able to fill many doorways in your home and give a few away as gifts too. Try making your own mistletoe ball to easily and cheaply decorate your home for the holidays.

Christmas is one of the best times for surprises and cheerful, festive decorations can be a great time to make even more surprises. Adults and children alike enjoy making crafts, especially when the creations can be proudly displayed in the home. Many crafts can easily be made by almost anyone to decorate your home or given to friends and family for gifts. The time spent as a family making decorations can be very rewarding. Your family may enjoy it so much that you choose to make this a special tradition each year.

Once easy Christmas craft is to make a small table top tree. Begin with a foam cone which can be purchased at most any craft store or online. Cover the entire cone with double sided tape. You can adorn the tree with colorful beads, candies, pre-cut foam or paper shapes or any other item you can think of to attach to the tree. Make sure to cover the entire tree with your decorations and don’t forget your tree topper. You can cut and angel or star from construction paper.

Another simple Christmas craft is making popcorn garland. Kids love to make this craft and don’t be surprised if they try to sneak a piece of popcorn or two. Simply take a piece of string, about arm’s length, and thread a needle on one end and try a knot on the other end. Begin poking the needle into a piece of popcorn and pull it to the end of the string. Tie another not when the string is full. You can tie the garland together to make longer pieces to decorate your Christmas tree, fireplace mantle, doorways and more.

These two craft ideas can are so simple and inexpensive. You and your children will enjoy making these decorations and will delight in showing their creations off to all of your family and friends.
